Bella Butterfly

This Butterfly is crochet in one piece and the only sewing needed is the antenna’s, eyes and wings. The ad free pattern can be purchased here

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc = single crochet (double crochet  UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

ch = chain

mc = magic circle

dec = decrease sc (sc 2 stitches together) (double crochet 2 stitches together UK)

inc = increase (2 sc in next stitch) (2 dc in next stitch UK)

[ ] = repeat

Materials

Weight 5 chunky chenille yarn (50 metres) (I used Aldi baby yarn 95 metres per 100g ball)

6mm hook I use this set from Amazon*

Small amounts of black, blue and white weight 3 yarn and 3mm hook for the eyes

Polyester toy filling

Needle

All parts are made going around in a spiral.

The Butterfly will measure 13 inches with weight 5 yarn or 6 inches with weight 3 yarn. However the size will depend on yarn and hook size used.

Head / Body 

Starting with light pink, stuff as you go

Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: [inc] x 6. (12)

Round 3: [sc 1, inc] x 6. (18)

Round 4: [sc 2, inc] x 2. (24)

Round 5: [sc 3, inc] x 6. (30)

Round 6: [sc 4, inc] x 6. (36)

Round 8: [sc 5, inc] x 6. (42)

Round 9-15: sc all. (42) Safety eyes between rounds 11 and 12 with 4 visible stitches between

Round 16: [sc 5, dec] x 6. (36)

Round 17: sc 2, dec, [sc 4, dec] x 5, sc 2. (30)

Round 18: [sc 3, dec] x 6. (24)

Round 19: sc 1, dec, [sc 2, dec] x 5, sc 1. (18)

Round 20: [sc 2, inc] x 6. (24)

Round 22: sc all. (24) 

Change to dark pink

Round 23-24: sc all. (24)

Change to yellow

Round 25-26: sc all. (24)

Change to green

Round 27-28: sc all. (24)

Change to blue

Round 29: [sc 2, dec] x 6. (18)

Change to light pink

Fasten off with a long end and weave through remaining stitches and pull closed.

Wings 

Make two starting with a long end of yellow

Round 1: (in a mc) [3 sc, ch2] x 4, slst to first, slst to first. (12) (using colour from 11-13)

Change to green

Round 2: [ch3, 2 dc, ch2, 3 dc] in ch2 space, [3 dc, ch2, 3 dc] in each ch2 space, slst to first. (24)

Change to dark pink

Round 3: [ch3, 5 dc, ch2, 6 dc], slst to between 3 dc from row below,* [6 dc, ch2, 6 dc], slst to between 3 dc from row below *repeat twice more, slst to first. (48)

Change to blue

Round 4: fold in half, join yarn at the green, working through both sides, ch1, sc around, at the ch2 space, [2 sc, ch2, 2 sc], sc to the next ch2 space [2 sc, ch2, 2 sc] sc to end, sc on the green, slst to fasten off.

Change to light pink

Round 5: ch1, sc around, at the ch2 space, [2 sc, ch2, sc in the front loops of sc below, 2 sc  in ch2 space, sc to the next ch2 space] repeat, sc to end. 

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Antenna’s 

Make two using any colour

Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: [inc] x 6. (12)

Round 3-4: sc all. (12)

Round 5: [dec] x 6. (6)

Round 6-8: sc all. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing and stuff.

Assembly

Pin wings in place and sew with the long end from the yellow at the front and back.then sew at the pink edge, at the top and bottom.

Pin the antennas and sew in place, then the eyes, add eyelashes and a smile with black yarn.
