Newborn Granny Poncho Free Crochet Pattern

This Simple granny style Poncho is an easy repeat pattern and works up quickly, it can be worked in an endless choice of colours. 

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc=single crochet (double crochet UK)

dc=double crochet (treble crochet UK)

Slst=slip stitch

ch=chain

Sk=skip 

Small shell=3 dc, double crochet (3 treble UK)

Large shell=5 dc, double crochet in one space (5 treble UK)

Gauge using 4mm hook 1 small shell=approx 2cmx2cm


Materials 

4mm and 4.5mm hooks I use this set from Amazon*

70g Paintbox yarns dk LoveCrafts paper white

Pom pom maker 

Needle 

Scissors 

Newborn

Ch 56

Join with a slst to the first chain making sure it’s not twisted.

Round 1

Ch3, 2 dc in same space as the ch3, ch1, sk3 chain stitches, 3 dc in next, ch1 *sk3 chains, 3 dc in next ch, ch1* 

repeat until you have (6) small shells (3 dc stitches). 


(First corner) 

Sk3 chains, 3 dc in next ch, ch2, 3 dc in same chain, 

ch1 *sk3 chain, 3 dc in next chain, ch1* repeat  until you’ve worked another (6) small shells. 

(Second corner) 

Skip 3ch, 3 dc in next chain, ch 2, 3 dc in same chain, 

ch1, making sure your work is not twisted and is facing the same way, join with slst in top of ch3.

(If you’re changing colour, fasten off last colour and join new colour in next ch1 space) 

(If using same colour slst across to the first ch1 space)

 Round 2

Ch3, 2 dc in same ch1 space, ch1, 

* 3 dc in next ch1 space, ch1* repeat  until you get to the first corner

3 dc, ch2, 3 dc in the ch 2 corner space.

ch1. * 3 dc in next chain space, ch1* repeat until you get to the second ch2 corner space. 

3 dc, ch2, 3 dc in the ch2 corner space. 

*3 dc in next ch space, ch1* repeat until end of row, join with slst in top of ch3. 

(If you’re changing colour, finish off last colour and join new colour in the next ch1 space) 

(If using same colour slst across to the next ch1 space)

Repeat round 2 

until  9 rounds have been worked.

Or work measures 7 inches long from the centre neck.

Or if you want it a bit longer continue until you have the length you want.

Last round

Slst to centre of small shell ch1 *Sc in centre of small shell, 1 large shell in chain space* repeat to end, slst in first sc and fasten off.

Join yarn at the top of neck opening and sc all around to finish off.


Fasten off and sew in all ends, then continue to tie below.

To make tie 

Using a 4.5mm hook

Ch 85

Slst to end and fasten off, weave through the spaces of the first row and make pom poms to sew on the ends.
