Simple Baby Cardigan Size Preemie Free Crochet Pattern

This cardigan is worked in one piece starting from the top and working down, then joining to make the sleeves and edging.

Preemie to fit 13 inch chest

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK terms

sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK terms)

ch=chain

sc2tog = sc 2 stitches together

[ ] = in the same stitch

slst = slip stitch

Materials

60 g Paintbox yarns dk LoveCrafts duck egg blue

3.5 and 4mm hook

4 x 15mm buttons

Gauge Square

With 4mm hook

9 sc x 8 rows = 2” x 2”

Body

With 4mm hook Ch37  

Row1  1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 4, [3 sc] in the next, sc 5, [3 sc] in the next, sc 12, [3 sc] in next, sc 5, [3 sc] in the next, sc 5. Turn. (44)

 

Row2  ch1, sc all. Turn. (44)

 

Row3 ch1, sc 6, [3 sc] in the next, sc 7, [3 sc] in the next, sc 14, [3 sc] in the next, sc 7, [3 sc] in the next, sc 6. Turn. (52)

 

Row4 ch1, sc all. Turn (52)

Repeat Row 14 until work measures approx 7.5 Inches from shoulder, ending with an even row. Continue with the buttonband

 

Buttonband

Row1 ch1, sc up the side of the cardigan (1 sc in each row). Turn

Row2 Ch1, sc all. Turn

 

Row3 Ch1, sc all. 

Fasten off.

Buttonhole band

Row1 With the right side facing, join yarn to the top of the right hand side of the front edge, ch1, sc 1 in each row. Turn

Mark out where you want the button holes, on the next row ch1 and skip the one where the markers are.

 

Row2 Buttonhole row, Ch1, sc all but ch1 and skip where markers are to create button holes. Turn

 

Row3 Ch1, sc in all including the chains. 

 

Fasten off and sew your buttons on to match the button holes and weave in all ends.


Sleeves

 

With 4mm hook

Row1  With WS facing rejoin  to first un-worked sc under arm, ch1, 1 sc in base of ch1, 1 sc in each of next 20, slst to first at beginning of row. (21) Turn

Row2-11 ch1, sc all, slst to first. (21) Turn

Row12 ch1, sc 19, sc2tog, slst to first. (20) Turn

Row13-14 ch1, sc all, slst to first. (20) Turn

Row15 ch1, sc 18, sc2tog, slst to first. (19) Turn

Row16 ch1 sc all, slst to first. (19) Turn

 

Repeat row 16 until the sleeve measures 7.5 inches from the shoulder.

 

Fasten off and repeat for the other sleeve.
