Stepping Stones Cardigan Free Crochet Pattern

This stepping stone effect baby cardigan is made using a simple hdc stitch for the yoke and the stepping stone effect is made using sc and dc and is quick and easy to work up, it can be made with one or more contrasting colours and is a good way of using up scrap yarn.

Materials

200 g Paintbox yarns dk LoveCrafts paper white and any two contrasting colours

3.5 and 4 mm hooks I use this set from Amazon*

5 x 12-15 mm buttons

Gauge Square

With 4mm hook

Row1 Ch10, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain across. (8) Turn

Row2-4 ch1, hdc in base of ch1, hdc 7. (8) Turn

Square should measure just over 4.5cm.

If you're out with a 4mm hook try 4.5mm hook.

If you have problems hitting the length but the width is ok, try dc instead of hdc.

Buttonhole Band

With 4mm hook 

Row1 Starting at bottom left side with the wrong side facing, ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc up to the top. Turn

Mark out where you want buttonholes to be.

 Row2 ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc all, ch1 and skip where each buttonhole marker is. Turn

Row3 ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc all. 

Fasten off.

Button Band

 With 4mm hook 

Row1 Starting at the top with the wrong side facing, ch1, sc in the base of ch1, sc down to the bottom. Turn

Row2 ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc back up to the top. Turn

Row3 ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc back down to the bottom. 

Fasten off.
