Baby Monster

These Baby Monsters are crocheted all in one piece, the arms are crocheted first, then the body is started, join the arms to the body and divide for the legs. The only parts to sew on are the eye and cheeks.

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK)

inc=increase (2 sc in next stitch) (2 dc in next stitch UK)

mc=magic circle

dec=invisible decrease (sc 2 stitches together using invisible decrease) (double crochet 2 stitches together UK)

Invisible decrease

Insert hook into the front loop of the next stitch then the front loop of the stitch after, yarn over and pull through the two stitches, (two loops left on hook) yarn over and pull through both.

Materials

Around 20 meters of main colour chunky chenille yarn

Scrap of contrasting colours for hair

6mm hook I use this set from Amazon*

Polyester toy filling

Needle

A small amount of black, blue, white and pink dk / weight 3 yarn for the eyes and cheeks

2.5mm hook

All parts are made going around in a spiral apart.

Monster will measure approx 5 inches tall, however size will depend on yarn and hook size used.

Arms

Make two using main colour and 6mm hook

Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2-3: sc all. (6)

Round 4: *sc 1, dec* x 2. (4)

Round 5: sc all. (4)

Fasten off.

Body / Legs

Using main colour and 6mm hook starting with the body

Round 1: 8 sc in mc. (8)

Round 2: *inc* x 8. (16)

Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 8. (24)

Round 4-6: sc all. (24)

Attaching Arms

Fold arms in half and sc through both sides

Round 7: sc 5, sc 2 through arm and body, sc 10, sc 2 through arm and body, sc 5. (24)

Round 8-9: sc all. (24)

Start stuffing and stuff as you go

Divide for legs

There will be 4 stitches left unworked that creates a gap between the legs, this will be sewn at the end.

Round 10: sc 12, skip 14, slst to next. (10)

Round 11: ch1, sc in the same, sc 9. (10)

Round 12-13: sc all. (10)

Round 14: *dec* x 5. (5)

Fasten off and continue with the second leg.

Second leg

Round 10: skip 2 from the first leg, join yarn, ch1, sc in the same and the next 9, slst to next. (10)

Round 11: ch1, sc in the same, sc 9. (10)

Round 12-13: sc all. (10)

Round 14: *dec* x 5. (5)

Fasten off with a long end.

Sew the gap between the legs, sew the arms so they are pointing down with a couple of stitches.

Eye

Starting with black and 2.5mm hook

Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Change to blue

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Change to white

Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)

Fasten off.

Cheeks 

Using pink and 2.5mm hook

Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Fasten off.

Cut 4, 8 inch strands of yarn. Fold the strands of yarn in half and pull the center part way through the first row of head, so it's about an inch through forming a loop, then pull the tail ends of yarn through the loop and tighten, snip ends to around 2cm.

Sew the eye and cheeks in place and sew a mouth with black yarn.
