Rainbow Drops Hooded Poncho

This Simple Poncho is an easy repeat pattern that works up quickly, it can be worked in an endless choice of colours. It can be made with a plain neck or with a hood. It has sizes from Newborn to Large adult.

Materials

4mm crochet hook

Dk / weight 3 yarn I used Womens Institute in White for the main colour and Jame C Brett Baby Twinkle DK Print shade BTP33 for the contrasting colour.

Needle

Scissors

Pom pom maker (optional)


Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

slst = slip stitch

ch = chain

Cluster= 3 double crochet (3 treble crochet UK)

[ ] = in the same stitch stitch

* * = repeat between


Gauge

With 4mm hook

18 dc x 8 rows = 4”

To check gauge throughout the pattern 7 clusters wide = 4”

5 rows cluster and 6 rows sc = 4”

Pattern notes

  • If using colour changing yarn as the contrasting colour you can keep the yarn attached and slst to the ch2 space to save on ends.

  • When making the hood it is possible to carry the yarn to save cutting each row (see video)

  • You may want to place a stitch marker in the two ch2 spaces on round 1 as this is where all corners will be worked.


Using the main colour, chain the required chains stated in the above size chart for the size that you want to make, join with a slst to the first chain making sure it’s not twisted.

Round 1: [ch3, 2 dc, ch2, 3 dc] in same chain (first corner), dc, 33 / 36 / 39 / 42 / 45 / 48 / 51 / 54 / 57 / 60, [3 dc, ch2, 3 dc] in the next chain (second corner), dc 33 / 36 / 39 / 42 / 45 / 48 / 51 / 54 / 57 / 60, slst to the first, then slst across to ch2 space and ch1 with the contrasting colour.

           

Round 2: [sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 corner, ch2, *skip 3 dc, sc between next two dc, ch2,* repeat to the ch2 corner, [sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 corner, ch2, *skip 3 dc, sc between next two dc, ch2,* repeat to the ch2 corner, slst to the first, slst across to the ch2 corner and ch3 with the main colour. 

Round 3: [ch3, 2 dc, ch2, 3 dc] in the ch2 corner, cluster in each ch2 space, [3 dc, ch2, 3 dc] in the ch2 corner, cluster in each ch2 space, slst to the first, then slst across to ch2 space and ch1 with the contrasting colour.

Round 4: [sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 corner, ch2, *sc between each cluster, ch2,* repeat to the ch2 corner, [sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 corner, ch2, *sc between each cluster, ch2,* repeat to the ch2 corner, slst to the first, slst to the ch2 corner with the main colour. 

Repeat rounds 3 and 4 until work measures required length in the size chart (measure from the centre neck) ending with a round 3. 

Or if you want it a bit longer, continue until you have the length you want.

Bottom Edging


ch1 *[sc, ch2, sc], skip 1* repeat to the end, slst to the first sc and fasten off.

Neck edging

The neck edging if you don’t want to add a hood.

Join the main colour at the centre back of neck, ch1 and sc around the neckline, slst to first and fasten off.

Hood 

Place a stitch marker at each side in the third space from the centre of the neck

With the wrong side facing, join contrasting colour in the third space from the centre of the neck with a 4mm hook 

Row 1: ch1, sc in the same. *ch2, sc in the next space between clusters* repeat across, including a sc in the last one with a stitch marker. Leaving the rest unworked. Turn 

Change to main colour

Row 2: ch3, 2 dc in the same, [3 dc] in each ch2 space. Turn 

Change to contrasting colour

Row 3: ch1, sc in the same. ch2, *sc, ch2 between each cluster* repeat in each space across, sc at the end of the last cluster. Turn 

Repeat rows 2 and 3 until work measures required length in the size chart, ending with a row 2. Or if you want it a bit longer, continue until you have the length you want.

Turn the hood inside out, fold together and sc through the first dc of both sides, *ch2, sc between clusters* repeat to end. Fasten off.

Hood edging

Join in the yarn at the beginning of hood and ch1, sc in the same, sc around to the other side of the hood, slst to first. 

Fasten off and sew in all ends.

Tie

Chain 91 / 96 / 106 / 116 / 126 / 136 / 146 / 151 / 161 / 171 using main colour

Fasten off and weave through round 1, then sew pom poms at the end.
