Cozy Cardigan Size Newborn

This cozy baby cardigan is made using a simple hdc (htc UK) stitch and is quick and easy to work up and is suitable for beginners.

The premium pattern can be purchased here in sizes tiny preemie - 2 years

Newborn to fit 14 inch chest

Materials

80g Painbox yarns dk LoveCrafts Dusty Rose

3.5 and 4 mm hooks I use this set from Amazon*

5 x 15mm buttons

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK terms

sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK)

hdc=half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)

ch=chain

inc=increase 

dec=decrease

ws=wrong side

rs=right side

rpt=repeat

slst=slip stitch

Gauge Square

With 4mm hook

Row1 Ch11, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each chain across. (9) Turn

Row2-5 ch1, hdc in base of ch1, hdc 8. (9) Turn

Square should measure 2 inches x 2 inches.

If you're out with a 4mm hook try 4.5mm hook.

If you have problems hitting the length but the width is ok, try dc instead of hdc.


* Working in the first stitch the ch1 does not count as a stitch so always ch1 and hdc in the first stitch.*

Ch38 with 4mm hook

Row1 1 hdc in 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc in each of next 4ch, 3 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of next 5ch, 3 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of next 12ch, 3 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of next 5ch, 3 hdc in next ch, 1 hdc in each of next 5ch. (44) Turn

 

Row2  ch1, 1 hdc in base of ch1, 1 hdc in each of next 5, 3 hdc in next, 1 hdc in each of next 7, 3 hdc in next, 1 hdc in each of next 14, 3 hdc in next, 1 hdc in each of next 7, 3 hdc in next, 1 hdc in each of next 6. (52) Turn

Row9 (Divide for arm holes) ch1, 1 hdc in base of ch1, 1 hdc in each of the next 12, 3 hdc in next, skip next 21, 3 hdc in next, 1 hdc in each of the next 28, 3 hdc in next, skip next 21, 3 hdc in next, 1 hdc in each of the next 13.  (66) Turn

 

Row10   ch1, hdc in base of ch1, hdc all.  (66) Turn

 

Repeat Row 10  until work measures approx 8.5 Inches from shoulder. Fasten off.

Sleeves

With 4mm hook

Row1  With WS facing rejoin  to first un-worked sc under arm, ch1, 1hdc in base of ch1, 1hdc in each of next 25, slst to first at beginning of row. (26) Turn

Row2-3 ch1 hdc all slst to first. (26) Turn

Row4 ch1, dec, hdc all, slst to first. (25) Turn

Row5 ch1, hdc all, slst to first. (25) Turn

Row6 ch1, dec, hdc all, slst to first. (24) Turn

Row7 ch1, hdc all, slst to first. (24) Turn

Row8 ch1, dec, hdc all, slst to first. (23) Turn

Row9 ch1, hdc all, slst to first. (23) Turn

Row10 ch1, dec, hdc all, slst to first. (22) Turn

Row11 ch1, dec, hdc all, slst to first (22)

 

Repeat row 11 until the sleeve measures 8 inches from the shoulder.

 

Fasten off and repeat for other sleeve.

Button/Buttonhole Bands

Using 3.5mm hook

Buttonhole band

Row1 With RS facing, rejoin color 1 to the top of the right hand side of the front edge, ch1, 1 sc in base of ch1, work sc evenly across . Turn

Mark out where you want the button holes, on the next row ch1 and skip the one where the markers are.

 

Row2 Buttonhole row, Ch1, sc in base of ch1, sc all but ch1 and skip where markers are to create button holes. Turn

 

Row3 Ch1, sc in base of ch1 and sc in all including chains. 

 

Fasten off.

 

Button band

Row1 With RS facing, join yarn to bottom of left hand side, ch1, 1 sc in base of ch1, sc evenly same amount of stitches as other side. Turn

Row2 Ch1, sc in base of ch1 and each st across. Turn

Row3 Ch1, sc in base of ch1 and each st across. 

 

Fasten off and sew your buttons on to match the button holes and weave in all ends.
