Criss Cross Hexagon Cardigan

This cardigan is made with two hexagons. It comes in sizes from baby to adult. My example was made using dk / weight 3 yarn but this cardigan can be made with any weight yarn and hook as it is made to measure.

Materials

I used Dk / weight 3 yarn for my example and have provided approx amount of yarn for this weight yarn only

4.5mm crochet hook or hook preferred for your choice of yarn

3-5 x 15-20mm buttons (if you want to use)

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc = single crochet (double crochet in UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

cc = criss cross (skip 1, dc, then dc in the skipped stitch) (skip 1, treble crochet then treble crochet in the skipped stitch UK)

cc x 2 = criss cross x 2 which is 4 dc in total (4 treble crochet UK)

slst = slip stitch

blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch)

[ ] = in the same stitch

* * = repeat between

ch = chain

Gauge

Gauge is not necessary as it is made to measure but this is what I got when making mine.

With 4.5mm hook

Row 1: Ch11, dc in fourth chain from hook, dc to end. (8)

Row 2-4: ch1, dc in same, dc to end. (8)

Square should measure 2”

Pattern notes:

  • My example is a size 3-6 months.

  • Follow the hexagon pattern until you reach the measurement that you are making (measure from the centre to the side of the hexagon to get this measurement)

  • On the last round of the hexagon the last side is joined as you go to create the sleeve.

  • The ch1 and 2 do not count as a stitch.

  • The ch3 counts as a dc.

  • The hexagon will not lie flat, it will be wavy, this is how it should be.

  • Slst to the ch2 corner space if using the same colour, or if changing colour join in any ch2 space.

  • The size guide for lengths is just a guide, but it’s always best to measure the individual you are making for, to get the perfect fit.

  • The last cc of the hexagon will be a bit tight to work into from the slst to the ch2 from the round below.

  • It can also be made with one round dc then one round criss cross to give a different look, like the picture below. (This is how I made on my YouTube tutorial)

  • Example: if it says cc x 4, do 8 dc instead.

Measure from the centre to the side

Seam the sleeves

On the last round of the hexagon, the last side will be continuously joined to the other side to form the sleeve. (or the last round can be worked as normal and sewn afterwards)

Fold the 3rd and 6th corner together and finish the last side of the hexagon by,

Working 2 dc in the corner, remove yarn from hook, insert hook into corner on other side and pull yarn through.

ch2, 2 dc in the corner at the working side, remove yarn from hook and insert hook in the fourth stitch of the corner at the other side and pull yarn through.

*at the working side, cc, remove yarn from hook, insert yarn into the last stitch of cc on other side and pull yarn through* repeat to the end.

After the last cc, slst to ch2 corner at the working side, remove yarn from hook, insert hook to ch2 space at other side, pull yarn through.

Fasten off.

Back infill

This will infill the back ready for joining and also add to the length. It is best to work a row on the left, then a row on the right, then on the last row continue from the left to join on the right.

Left side

Join yarn at the front bottom ch2 corner

Row 1: ch3, dc in the corner space, cc along the bottom, [2 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in the ch2 corner space, cc up to the top, [2 dc] in the last ch2.

Fasten off and join yarn in the second stitch from row 1.

Row 2: ch3, dc in the first stitch, cc to the corner, [2 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in the corner, cc to the top.

Repeat row 2 as many times as needed to reach the infill measurement for the size you are making in the chart. On the last row join to the top right and finish the last row by joining. (see below joining the back)

Right side

Join yarn to the top ch2 corner

Row 1: ch3, dc in the corner, cc across to the bottom corner, [2 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in the ch2 corner space, cc across the bottom, [2 dc] in the bottom ch2 space.

Fasten off and join yarn in the second stitch from row 1.

Row 2: ch3, dc in the first stitch, cc to the corner, [2 dc, ch2, 2 dc] in the corner, cc to the bottom front.

Repeat row 2 as many times as needed to reach the infill measurement for the size you are making in the chart.

The last row will be continued from the left, to join with the right (see below joining the back)

Joining the back

After finishing the last row of the left, slst to the second stitch of the top right, ch3, dc in the first stitch, remove yarn from hook, insert yarn into second stitch from the left hexagon and pull through, *cc, remove yarn from hook, insert yarn into the last stitch of cc on other side and pull yarn through* repeat to the end.

After the last cc, 2 dc in the corner, remove yarn from hook, insert hook into corner of other side, ch2, 2 dc in ch2 space at working side, cc along the bottom.

Add length to the body

Join yarn in the second stitch, ch3, dc in the first stitch, cc to end. Repeat for as many rows that you need.

At the middle do 2 dc in each ch2 space.

Edging

If making buttonholes mark out where you want the button holes before starting row 2 then ch2 where your markers are and skip 1 stitch. Then on round 3, count the ch2 space as one stitch.

I made 3 rounds for the smaller sizes, but for the bigger sizes you may want a few more rounds and make the buttonhole on the middle round.

Join yarn in the bottom right corner

Round 1: ch1, [sc, ch2, sc] in the same, sc up the side, around the top back, sc down the other side, [sc, ch2, sc] in the corner, sc across the bottom, slst to first, slst to ch2 space.

Round 2: ch1, [sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 space, sc all, slst to first, slst to ch2 space. (doing (sc, ch2, sc) in the corner)

Round 3: ch1, [sc, ch2, sc] in the ch2 space, skip 1, *[sc, ch2, sc], skip 1* repeat to the end, slst to first.

Fasten off.

Add length to the sleeves

Row 1: Join yarn in the left ch2 space, ch3, dc in the right ch2 space, cc to end, slst to first.

Row 2: join yarn in the second stitch, ch3, dc in the first stitch, cc to end, slst to first.

Repeat row 2 as many times as you need to reach the correct measurement in the size chart.

Cuffs

For the cuffs I did the first 2 rounds of sc and decreasing (crocheting 2 together) you can decrease to what you like (best to have an even amount for the last round)

I ended with 22 stitches for the 3-6 months

Round 1-2: ch1, sc in the same, sc all, slst to first.

Round 3: ch1, [sc, ch2, sc] in the same, skip 1, *[sc, ch2, sc], skip 1* repeat to the end, slst to first.
