Gingerbread Cushion

This free gingerbread cushion crochet pattern is made using corner to corner. I have included instructions on how to start regular corner to corner, mini corner to corner. Change colours, follow the charts, progress photos and some videos. The pattern includes a few ways to get multiple sizes.

WRITTEN IN ENGLISH US CROCHET TERMS WITH ABBREVIATIONS FOR UK

sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)

hdc = half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)

dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)

Block = ch3, 3 dc (ch3, 3 treble crochet) 

slst = slip stitch

blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch)

[ ] = in the same stitch

* * = repeat between

ch = chain

RS = Right side (working down)

WS = Wrong side (working up)

F/O = Fasten off with a long end for sewing



MATERIALS

DK / Weight 3 yarn. I used a variety of different yarns but mostly Stylecraft Special DK 295 metres per 100g. The fluffy yarn I used is King Cole Truffle Shade Coconut. 

Approx 300 meters of main colour, 120 meters of gingerbread colour and small amounts of the rest.

Yarn amounts will vary, depending on yarn, tension and which technique you use.


4mm crochet hook

Needle

Scissors 

5 x 20mm Buttons or a Zip for your size

An inner cushion for your size

The below gauge is approximate and will vary on your yarn, hook and tension.


GAUGE

DC C2C (regular c2c)

Using a 4mm hook and Weight 3 yarn

6 x 6 blocks = 3.5” x 3.5”

Each 31 x 31 grid block will measure approximately 18”


GAUGE

DC C2C (regular c2c)

Using a 4mm hook and Weight 4 yarn

6 x 6 blocks = 4” x 4”

Each 31 x 31 grid block will measure approximately 20”


GAUGE

HDC C2C (mini c2c)

Using a 4mm hook and Weight 3 yarn

6 x 6 blocks = 2.5” x 2.5”

Each 31 x 31 grid block will measure approximately 13”


GAUGE

HDC C2C (mini c2c)

Using a 4mm hook and Weight 4 yarn

6 x 6 blocks = 3” x 3”

Each 31 x 31 grid block will measure approximately 15”

NOTES


  • Depending on the above gauge and materials the following sizes are approximate.

  • Making the dc corner to corner and weight 3 yarn will make the finished cushion 18”. Using weight 4 yarn will make 20”.

  • Making the mini corner to corner and weight 3 yarn will make the finished cushion 13”. Using weight 4 yarn will make 15”.

  • Make one C2C with your choice of design and one the same 31 x 31 blocks in the main colour for the back.

  • I found it looked neater, making the eyes and some other details afterwards and sewing on, see the chart for the details, skip that coloured block on the corner to corner chart. When making add ons always fasten off with a long end for sewing.

  • I have included progress photos, explanations on how to work corner to corner and some videos to help with the colour changing.

HOW TO FOLLOW THE CHARTS FOR C2C

  • Each ch3, 3 dc = 1 block in the chart.

  • The chart starts at the bottom right with row 1 and will be worked diagonally.

  • ⇓ RS Rows: Are odd numbers and will be worked downwards.

⇑ WS Rows: Are even numbered and will be worked upwards.

DOUBLE CROCHET CORNER TO CORNER NOTES

  • The first part of corner to corner will be increasing each row.

  • The beginning of the ch6 is the ch3.

  • The starting tail will always be at the bottom right (place a marker on row 1 so you know which is the right side, then leave all yarn tails at the back of work). 

  • Every odd / RS row will be worked from the top down.

  • Every even / WS row will be worked from the bottom up.

  • Each part is always started in the same way, as below, then following the chart to ensure you have the right amount of blocks, changing the colours as indicated. 

STARTING DOUBLE CROCHET CORNER TO CORNER

RS Row 1: Ch6, dc in the 4th chain from hook, dc 2. (place a stitch marker, to mark the right side) TURN

WS Row 2: ch6, dc in the 4th chain from hook, dc 2, slst to the ch3 from the previous row, ch3, dc 3. TURN

RS Row 3: ch6, dc in the 4th chain from hook, dc 2, slst to the ch3 from the previous row, ch3, dc 3, slst to the next ch3 from the previous row, ch3, dc 3. TURN

Repeat row 3 following the chart (each row will go up by one block).

START DECREASING

You will need to start decreasing at the top and bottom of the chart, follow these steps or watch the video.

MINI C2C (HALF DOUBLE CROCHET CORNER TO CORNER) 

  • Following the charts will be the same as above.

  • The first part of corner to corner will be increasing each row.

  • The beginning of the ch4 is the ch2.

  • The starting tail will always be at the bottom right. 

  • Every odd / RS row will be worked from the top down.

  • Every even / WS row will be worked from the bottom up.

  • Each part is always started in the same way, as below, then following the chart to ensure you have the right amount of blocks, changing the colours as indicated. 

STARTING HALF DOUBLE CROCHET CORNER TO CORNER

Row 1: Ch4, hdc in the 3rd chain from hook, hdc 1.

Row 2: ch4, hdc in the 3rd chain from hook, hdc 1, slst to the ch2 from the previous row, ch2, hdc 2. TURN

RS Row 3: ch4, hdc in the 3rd chain from hook, hdc 1, slst to the ch2 from the previous row, ch2, hdc 2, slst to the next ch2 from the previous row, ch2, hdc 2. TURN

Repeat row 3 following the chart (each row will go up by one block).
