Free Hippo Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

This free Hippo amigurumi crochet pattern is part of my baby zoo collection and the ad free PDF download can be purchased here for £2.00

Written in US terms with abbreviations for UK

sc=single crochet (double crochet UK)

inc=increase by 2sc in next stitch

dec=decrease by sc next 2 stitches together

ch=chain

mc=magic circle


Materials 

50g Dk light grey for main colour

10g white yarn

2mm hook I use this set from Amazon*

10mm Safety eyes or black yarn for sewn on eyes

Polyester toy stuffing

Needle 

Stitch marker

All parts are made going round in a spiral, attaching arms and legs as we go to make less sewing.

Hippo will measure approximately 11 inches from head to toe when finished (8 inches when sat)

Head

Using light grey

Nostrils 


Using grey make two

Rnd2 *inc* x 4, fasten off leaving the rest of the stitches unworked.

Fasten off leaving a long end to sew onto snout.

Sew a few stitches of white in the middle, sew in the ends not needed leaving one long grey one to sew onto snout.


Ears 

Make two in white

Fasten off.


Make two in grey

Do not fasten off, place white ear on top of the grey so the good sides are on the outsides

Sew a few stitches to close the ear up at one side.


Line up so the top of the ear is 8 rows above the eye, sew a few stitches down the front then down the back of the ears.


Lightly stuff the snout and pin in place just under the eyes, ensuring its central.

Start sewing in place when half way round add some more stuffing so it's quite firm, then add a bit more if needed before closing up.


Sew the nostrils on the 5th row of snout around 6 stitches apart, sew the bottom (where it's more flatter, then sew just round the white stitching, curling the grey edges round.


Add some eyebrows with black yarn above the eyes.

Fasten off leaving a long end to sew head to body and finish stuffing.

Pin the head in place and sew when  happy with position, adding more stuffing before closing up to ensure firm.

Tail 

Cut 2 strands of yarn in grey around 12 inches, then insert a 3mm hook through 2 stitches where you want the tail to be.

Pull through yarn and ch6, fasten off and cut ends
