Woodland Squidgems

These cute little woodland creatures are part of my squidgems collection. They are quick and easy to work up. This collection features Hedgehog, Fox, Bear and Mouse.

Yarn

DK, light weight, #3 yarn in beige, brown, white, orange, black and pink.

Sport weight, 4 ply, # 2 yarn or Embroidery thread for the eyes in white, blue, green,

brown and black.

Hook & Other Materials 

  • US Size C (2.5mm) crochet hook

  • Yarn needle

  • Stuffing

Written in English US terms with abbreviations for UK terms

sc=single crochet (double crochet in UK)

hdc=half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)

dc=double crochet (treble crochet UK)

ch=chain

slst=slip stitch

mc=magic circle

inc=increase

dec=decrease

Special Stitches

blo (back loop only) = crochet into the back loop only (not both loops)

Head / Body for all

Using beige for the hedgehog, grey for the mouse, brown for the bear and start with

orange for the fox.

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)

Round 4: *sc 2, inc* x 6. (24)

Round 5: *sc 3, inc* x 6. (30)

Round 6: *sc 4, inc* x 6. (36)

Round 7: *sc 5, inc* x 6. (42)

Rounds 8-20: sc all. (42) Place a marker at round 8 for the eyes. Do round 12-15 in

white for the fox.

Round 21: *sc 5, dec* x 6. (36)

Start stuffing and continue throughout.

Round 22: *sc 4, dec* x 6. (30)

Round 23: *sc 3, dec* x 6. (24)

Round 24: *sc 2, dec* x 6. (18)

Round 25: *sc 1, dec* x 6. (12)

Round 26: *dec* x 6. (6)

Fasten off and sew closed.

Eyes for all

Using embroidery thread or 4ply yarn. Start with black

Round 1: 6 sc in a mc, slst to first.

Round 2: ch1, 2 sc in the same, 2 sc in each of the next 2, join eye colour and 2 sc

in each of the next 3, slst to first. (12)

Fasten off black leaving a long end, fasten off eye colour.

Round 3: join white at the other side at the beginning of the eye colour, ch1, sc

across the eye colour part and slst into the first black. Fasten off leaving a long black

and white strand for sewing eyes to the head. Sew two white lines at the top left side

of each eye.

Legs for all

Make two in body colour (black for fox)

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Rounds 3-4: sc all. (12)

Round 5: *dec* x 6. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing and stuff

Arms for all

Make two in body colour (orange for fox)

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Rounds 2-5: sc all. (6)

Fasten off, no need to stuff.

Hedgehog

Using brown

Round 1 : 8 sc in mc. (8)

Rounds 2-15 will be worked in the blo

Round 2: (in blo) *inc* x 8. (16)

Round 3: (in blo) *sc 1, inc* x 8. (24)

Round 4: (in blo) *sc 2, inc* x 8. (32)

Round 5: (in blo) *sc 3, inc* x 8. (40)

Round 6: (in blo) *sc 4, inc* x 8. (48)

Rounds 7-15: (in blo)sc all. (48)

Round 16: hdc 1, 2 dc in each of the next 2, hdc 1, sc 1, leaving the rest un-worked.

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Join yarn to the beginning first front loop, right at the top, *ch5, sk 1, slst into the next* repeat, working round in a spiral back to the bottom, slst to last and fasten off.

Ears

Make two in body colour

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: sc all. (6)

Round 3: *sc 2, inc* x 2. (8)

Round 4: sc all. (8)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Pin the eyes so the top is level with round 8 and sew in place.

Sew a nose and mouth with black yarn, sew 3 stitches of pink for the cheeks.

Sew the legs and arms in place.

Flower

Using embroidery thread or 4ply yarn

Round 1 : mc, *3 dc, slst into centre of mc* repeat 4 more times.

Fasten off and sew a center.

Fox

Ears

Make two starting with black

Round 1: 6 sc in mc. (6)

Change to orange

Round 2: sc all. (6)

Round 3: *sc 2, inc* x 2. (8)

Round 4: *sc 3, inc* x 2. (10)

Round 5: *sc 4, inc* x 2. (12)

Round 6: *sc 5, inc* x 2. (14)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Tail

Starting with white

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: sc all. (6)

Round 3: *inc* x 6. (12)

Change to orange

Round 4: *sc 1, dec* x 4. (8)

Rounds 5-10: sc all. (8)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing and stuff.

Nose

Starting with black

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Change to orange

Round 2: sc all. (6)

Round 3: *inc* x 6. (12)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew the eyes, nose and ears, then sew the legs, arms and tail.

Bear

Ears

Make two using body colour

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Rounds 3-4: sc all. (12)

Round 5: *sc 2, dec* x 3. (9)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Muzzle

Using beige

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Round 3: *sc 1, inc, x 6. (18)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Sew a nose and mouth with black yarn.

Sew the muzzle and eyes in place. Then sew the arms, legs and ears and sew some pink cheeks under the eyes.

Mouse

Make two using body colour

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Round 3: *sc 1, inc* x 6. (18)

Round 4: sc all. (18)

Round 5: *ch1, sc* x 18. (18)

Fasten off.

Tail

Using body colour, ch30, slst into the second ch from hook and each chain across.

Fasten off.

Mouth

Using white

Round 1 : 6 sc in mc. (6)

Round 2: *inc* x 6. (12)

Round 3: sc all. (12)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing and sew a nose and mouth, sew 3 stitches in pink for cheeks.
